  10.  AB    While HIV infection continues to mainly affect homosexual men in North
  11.        America, transmission to women and children is increasing rapidly. A
  12.        multi-disciplinary outpatient facility designed to address the unique
  13.        medical and psychosocial needs of HIV infected women, children, youth
  14.        and families has been established in Vancouver. While separate and
  15.        unique, the medical and psychosocial issues of women and their children
  16.        are often inter-related. Similarly the needs of both infected and
  17.        noninfected partners and family members are distinct, yet
  18.        interconnected. The Women and Family HIV Centre acknowledges the
  19.        inter-relatedness and complexity of HIV infection in family units. The
  20.        core multi-disciplinary team consists of both adult and pediatric
  21.        infectious disease specialists, a social worker, clinic and outreach
  22.        nurses, dieticians, pharmacists and other support staff all with skills
  23.        in both children and women's health. While the definition of family is
  24.        kept broad, the emphasis is to provide medical care and support for all
  25.        HIV infected women, children, youth and their families. Other
  26.        initiatives include education, prevention, research and outreach
  27.        programs to women and more disadvantaged minority groups. The centre is
  28.        a unique model, designed to improve the care of HIV infected women and
  29.        children, and ultimately to impact on the second wave of the epidemic.
